District 9 and Neill Blomkamp: You’ve seen it and him before, you just don’t know it

Tuesday, May 12th, 2009

First, check out the new trailer for director Neill Blomkamp’s (yeah, that’s Neill with two “L’s”) upcoming film “District 9″, in which extraterrestrials have become refugees in South Africa, and are forced to live in slum-like conditions until they find a kindred spirit in a government agent that is exposed to their biotechnology. It’s an interesting twist on “alien movies”. Some people (yours truly included) will find the trailer oddly familiar.

Second Superman movie to be a finale

Tuesday, April 1st, 2008

SupermanSuperman returns… but just long enough to say hi. No time for a “stop and chat.” You know how it is.

The heirs of Superman co-creator Jerome Siegel are entitled to a share in the U.S. copyright of the Man of Steel, according to a federal judge in Los Angeles.

Warner Brothers (who is the sole owner of the international copyright) is obviously challenging the ruling. However, if they lose, then they don’t get to do whatever the hell they want, whenever the hell they want (starting 2013). The heirs would control the user of the Superman character until at least 2033.

With this in mind, it looks as if the sequel to the franchise will be the finale to the franchise; the idea being that you can’t reboot a franchise if you don’t have the time to make… ya know… movies. So they’re going to take what time they have left and make one last hooray (and hopefully cash in where Superman Returns had a little trouble).

This last film will most likely be based on the most recent script pitched to the studio: Doomsday. This, of course, is based on the recent (2007) feature length cartoon entitled “Superman: Doomsday” which is based on the DC Comics’ “The Death of Superman” storyline (where Superman lives gets badly injured).

IMDB still has the next film title listed as “Superman: Man of Steel,” but keep your eyes peeled for “Superman: Doomsday Live Action Spectacular“.

Quick facts:
Superman Returns domestic gross: $200 million
Superman Returns foreign gross: $190 million
Superman Returns IMAX gross: $23 million
Superman Returns budget: $200 - $270 million
Superman Returns advertising: $40 million
Superman Returns DVD sales: $82 million

Incredible Hulk vs. Hulk

Monday, March 17th, 2008

Nobody liked Ang Lee’s 2003 Hulk starring Eric Bana as the big green jimmy dean eatin machine.  I was not one of them.  I thoroughly enjoyed the film and all this talk of a new Hulk has me itching to bring out the old DVD.  What’s the difference between this year’s Hulk and that of five years ago?  Well…this one’s Incredible, and was written by Edward Norton who also happens to star (Eric Bana wasn’t too keen on reprising the role).  One reason people didn’t like Hulk (2003) was for the visual effects (which I credited as being some of the best out there courtesy of Industrial Light & Magic, the same all-stars who brought you Jurassic Park, Star Wars, and Transformers).

So let’s take a look at two stills.  One from The Incredible Hulk (2008) and one from Hulk (2003)

While I’m looking forward to the new movie and will most certainly see it in theaters, the original looks better than the new effects courtesy of Rhythm & Hues Studios (Daredevil, some Chronicles of Narnia…).  Yea yea, it’s just a screenshot but that’s the best sign of great visual effects.  Check out the new Incredible Hulk trailer over at MTV here.
