District 9 and Neill Blomkamp: You’ve seen it and him before, you just don’t know it

First, check out the new trailer for director Neill Blomkamp’s (yeah, that’s Neill with two “L’s”) upcoming film “District 9″, in which extraterrestrials have become refugees in South Africa, and are forced to live in slum-like conditions until they find a kindred spirit in a government agent that is exposed to their biotechnology. It’s an interesting twist on “alien movies”. Some people (yours truly included) will find the trailer oddly familiar.

This is animal tamer Askold Zapashny of the Zapashny Brothers Circus in St Petersburg and not even his ponytail can keep this guy from looking absolutely, freaking, awesome.

Forget a new logo, the Detroit Lions should just pay this guy to be their mascot. That’ll turn around a season…

Though it’s not official yet, the Detroit Lions are giving themselves a much-needed (and rather spiffy) face-lift, and recent history shows that’s probably a smart move. As you can see the font is more dynamic and contains a bit of a reference to lion’s mane, while the logo’s silhouette is largely unchanged, but the additional details are more fearsome, dynamic, and just cooler in general. This comes after the Detroit Lions completed a historic, first-ever 0-16 season in the 2008 NFL season. But fear not Lions fans, an logo/uniform update has proved good luck for recent sports teams.

2003 San Diego Padres finished 64-98 as the worst team in the MLB
2004 San Diego Padres finished 87-75 and competed for NL Wild Card (with a new logo, jersey, and ballpark)

vs 2007 Tampa Bay Devil Rays finished 66-96 as the worst team in the MLB
2008 Tampa Bay Rays finished 97-76 and represented the American League in the World Series (with a new logo, jersey, and a name-change) vs 2008 Detroit Lions finish 0-16 for the first time in NFL history… obviously worst in the league

Amazon’s Kindle 2 Makes Noise

Amazon.com’s latest edition e-reader, the Kindle 2, is making noise in the publishing world… literally. Other than sporting a slimmer body, the newest version of the reader is very similar to its predecessor (even priced the same at $359). There is one addition that has lawmakers and (more specifically) the Authors Guild concerned: the Kindle 2’s new text-to-speech ability.
