GWAR - Bob Dylan, eat your heart out

GWARGWAR… it’s a noise. It’s a state of being. It’s a band. Created in 1985 and dressed as they are at right, would you believe they’re still around… doing things?

A mix of heavy-metal and punk rock, these guys are probably best known for their outrageous costumes and ridiculous on-stage performances: throwing “bodies” into a “machine” and spraying the audience with “blood” and “semen.” Oh my… where can I get some “tickets”?

Current members include: Oderus Urungus (immediate front in the above picture), Beefcake the Mighty (far back right), Flattus Maximus, Balsac the Jaws of Death, and Jizmak Da Gusha. But don’t forget those great former like Nippleus Erectus, and Lee Beato (and there are oh so many more).

Alas, talking doesn’t do these guys justice… so check out some videos after the jump.

Here’s a music video of their cover of Alice Cooper’s “School’s Out”:

Not as good as the original, but you have to admit they add a certain je ne sais qua. Then you’ve got my personal favorite… an interview between Beefcake the Mighty and Oderus Urungus and Joan River. These guys never leave character (not just for the interview but for life in general) and they’re actually pretty funny:

Wait! What does GWAR even mean? I’m so glad you asked. According to David Brockie (the filthy human fleshling name given to the mighty Oderus Urungus), it does not mean:

  • Gay Woman Against Rape
  • Great White Aryan Race
  • Gay Weird Anal Reprobates
  • God What an Awful Racket

It’s just short for “GWAARGGGH!!!”, the original name of the band… kind of anti-climactic isn’t it?
